The all-new Patreon era of NF Magazine is officially under way! Print copies of the new “Issue #20: 30 Years of The Legend of Zelda” have started arriving in subscribers’ mailboxes, containing the lovely double-sided Hyrule Warriors Legends/Fire Emblem Fates posters you see above. But wait! Did you sign up in time to get this issue? If you’re running late with renewing your 2015 subscription or if you’d like to sign up to start getting NF delivered to your home for the very first time, here’s another reminder that our subscriptions are now being handled at Patreon.com/NintendoForce. You go there, click “Become a patron” at the top of the page and then select the type of subscription you’d like to receive going forward. Simple as that! In fact, signing up on our new Patreon page is the only way to get Issue #20! It’s a Patreon-exclusive issue for the next full year, so even though it’s now listed alongside the […]

Hey there, Nintendo Force fans! It’s been a while since we last posted an Update, but you know we’ve been busy if you’ve been checking your mailbox – Issue #16 is making its way into the wild as we speak. The digital versions went out last week, and physical copies should be arriving at most print subscribers’ homes within the next few days. (If they haven’t already!) Issue #16 is called “Warning! Construction Zone” and shines its spotlight on the upcoming you-make-the-levels Mario game, Super Mario Maker. Taking its focus on user-created content as our inspiration for the entire issue’s theme, we then bring you a history of how user-created content has evolved in Nintendo games over time. Then we turn back the clock to take a retrospective look at Mario Paint (the spiritual predecessor to Super Mario Maker in many respects, not the least of which was its introduction of everyone’s favorite Undodog). We focus the Community section on […]

It’s the end of the week now, and the shock of hearing about Robin Williams’ death has finally begun to fade – now, most of the discussion seems to be centering on how to properly memorialize a man who meant so much to so many. In the gaming community, two of the leading ideas have involved representing Robin as an in-game character – first in World of Warcraft (which Blizzard has confirmed that they will do), and second in the new Legend of Zelda game scheduled to arrive next year on Wii U (which Nintendo fans are petitioning for now). Both would be appropriate – Robin was both an avid WoW player and famous Zelda fan. He, of course, named his daughter Zelda after the princess in the NES games. One other idea occurred to me, though, and I wanted to share it here. It’s nothing too complicated, but it’s a Nintendo-specific way to remember Robin that will be available […]

We’ve just progressed past the five-week mark in the NF Magazine Year 2 Subscriptions Kickstarter, meaning we’ve got just about 10 days remaining in our quest to reach our stretch goals. The next one on our list is approaching fast, as we’re less than $2,000 away from establishing production budgets for all of our Year 2 issues – meaning our team will be able to be paid for all their hard work! The money collected up to this point has all been designated to cover the costs of production – meaning the cost to print our issues, package them and ship them around the world to our subscribers. So it’s only with this stretch goal that we’re able to set aside an extra fund to compensate our previously all pro-bono NF staff! For today’s Update, our campaign host Jonathan Holmes has once again placed himself in front of the camera. He’s shot this new footage to expand on his views […]

When We Catch the Future

  • Posted by:

It could be that we’re heading toward a future in which nearly all content, including Nintendo systems as well as niche games, will live online forever more. Already there are smart phones and tablets that will run emulators for major console systems, and that can function like consoles themselves in a home environment. Niche Hobbies Some might imagine a future of such convergence and centrality that the Web becomes too library-like or somehow too official. There is still a refreshing feeling now, as with the NF online magazine mirroring a hobby and subculture located offline. Some may not necessarily want to drop the novelty of a niche or subculture. Anyway, the Web supports unlimited ways for people to organise as well as share what they’re doing and what they enjoy. But there does seem to be a convergence toward the Web, and, in turn away from proprietary gaming devices. It’s becoming a Web-centered situation, and any device with access could […]
