Hey there, Nintendo Force fans! It’s been a while since we last posted an Update, but you know we’ve been busy if you’ve been checking your mailbox – Issue #16 is making its way into the wild as we speak. The digital versions went out last week, and physical copies should be arriving at most print subscribers’ homes within the next few days. (If they haven’t already!)

Issue 16 in the Wild

Issue #16 is called “Warning! Construction Zone” and shines its spotlight on the upcoming you-make-the-levels Mario game, Super Mario Maker. Taking its focus on user-created content as our inspiration for the entire issue’s theme, we then bring you a history of how user-created content has evolved in Nintendo games over time. Then we turn back the clock to take a retrospective look at Mario Paint (the spiritual predecessor to Super Mario Maker in many respects, not the least of which was its introduction of everyone’s favorite Undodog). We focus the Community section on different ways fans have “made Mario” in different mediums and offer up an advance review of Yoshi’s Woolly World (which doesn’t include a level editor, but is nonetheless a celebration of incredible creativity).

The double-sided poster this time around brings you Mario Maker on one side and Yoshi’s Woolly World on the other. (We had the posters printed right before Nintendo decided to add “Super” to Mario Maker’s name, too, so feel free to grab a Sharpie and write that in up in the corner if you like.)

Lastly, our stretch goal-promised papercraft model is included with this issue as well! We partnered with Christopher Beaumont, the creator of Cubeecraft, to offer his iconic Mario Cubee in a never-before-available high-resolution form, printed and distributed to all you print subscribers on fine glossy paper. (If you’re a digital PDF subscriber, you got the source file included with your issue download for you to be able to print it out yourself.) What better way to celebrate the upcoming release of Super Mario Maker than by working with your hands to make your very own little Mario?

Thank You Mr Iwata

Just as Issue #16 was wrapping up its production cycle, we – along with the rest of the Nintendo fandom around the world, and the entire video game industry beyond that – were dealt a severe blow when we learned that Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, had suddenly passed away. He was 55 years old – born on December 6, 1959, he left us on Saturday, July 11, 2015, after losing his battle with cancer.

The fact that he was sick was known publicly – he’d missed attending the last two E3 shows in person on the advice of his doctor, and last year he’d had surgery to remove a tumor found growing on his bile duct. At the time, it seemed like that procedure had gone well. The reports coming back from Japan were positive, and Mr. Iwata resumed his duties as both President of Nintendo overall and CEO of Nintendo of America later in 2014 – we reported on that just a few issues ago, in the News section of Issue #12.

But it seems the illness was still taking its toll.

The event of Mr. Iwata passing away demands recognition and a full celebration of his life and accomplishments, and I want to let you all know that our plan is to provide exactly that. Our final deadline for content to be turned in for Issue #16 was Friday, July 10 – meaning the issue was already nearly done when Mr. Iwata passed away the very next day. Rather than cut content we had already prepared for you here and shoehorn in a celebration of Mr. Iwata’s life at the very last minute, we made the decision to acknowledge his passing on the last page of Issue #16 – then let you know that we’ll dedicate our entire next issue to him. We’re going to take our time and do it right. I hope you all understand.

And I hope you all will participate! In the days that have passed since July 11, it’s been incredible to see the outpouring of love, support, encouragement and creativity from fans honoring Mr. Iwata’s life and everything he’s meant to us. We’d like for you to share your stories with us! Send us your memories of Mr. Iwata. Your artwork. Or share with us the stories and art you’ve seen shared by others that have helped you so far. We’ll collect them all and create a lasting, printed volume that will endure, so even years down the road we’ll all be able to look back and remember how the sadness of Mr. Iwata’s passing resulted in such a beautiful unification of heart for Nintendo fans.

This will take the place of the Player’s Poll contest for this issue. We’ll resume the Player’s Poll next time, with double prizes to make up for the fact that it’s skipping an issue.

Lastly, a special thanks to our fans the Two Button Crew for the great Nintendo Force Magazine promotional video they posted on YouTube this week! We didn’t even ask them to make it – they just did it on their own. I guess we must be doing something right! You can watch the video up at the top of this post, then click over to YouTube to give the guys a Follow and check out the rest of their Nintendo-focused content.

Hope your summer is going well, everyone! I’m off to get back to work making Issue #17 (and maybe play some of the new Splatoon content if I have the time).
