Our latest issue, #8 – The Road to Mario Kart 8, has been available for a few weeks now. It should have made it into the mailboxes of all of our subscribers by now! But if there are any of you out there who haven’t yet joined the Force with a Year 2 subscription (or if you’re just interesting in this issue individually), it’s long overdue that we gave you a Look Inside! The Look Inside page for Issue #8 is now live! You’ll get the usual array of page previews and a bit of insight into the production process that went into making it a reality. And you can order a copy by clicking here! A Twitter user just posted this morning that they were surprised to see how cheap the price was for a printed copy. It’s true! The days of having to pay $18-$20 per issue for print-on-demand individual issues orders are being phased out, as we’re […]

And, at last, we’ve caught ourselves back up. The new Look Inside: Issue #6 page is now available, so our site’s finally got a source of page previews and extra insight for all of our issues thus far. Take a look at it, won’t you? And if you pick up any of our Bundle options in the NF Store, you can get a copy of Issue #6 for yourself – some print copies are still available as of this writing, but they won’t last forever! Now that our Looking Back series has come to a close, the next order of business is the reveal of our Issue #7 cover and the announcement of our Subscription Year 2 renewal plan. Stay tuned for that to come to this NFMagazine.com home page next! (Sorry for running a bit late with getting that info posted here – we’re in final deadline crunch time mode here at the office! I promise it’ll be worth […]

I knew we had to do something special for Pokémon. The series only gets a new generation once every couple of years – and X and Y’s simultaneous global release in October was going to be an unprecedented event. So we went all-out in planning the most Pokémon-packed magazine issue imaginable. And then stepped our game up even more. I was torn about which of the two games – X or Y – should be represented on the cover. Or whether we should combine them? That didn’t seem right. I really wanted both games to have the coveted cover art position, so fans of both could choose with version of the issue they wanted. So we did both – but on the same issue, together. Xerneas on the front, Yveltal on the back, in a flippable cover the likes of which Nintendo Power never attempted. It was kind of wild and kind of wacky, but one of those decisions that […]

There are some years when Nintendo’s showing at the annual E3 Expo in Los Angeles leaves fans a little disappointed – but 2013 was not one of them. From Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze to Mario Kart 8 to the new Super Smash Bros. for both Wii U and 3DS, the reveals came fast and furious and especially delighted the old-school fans who’ve been following the company since the ’80s. Mega Man’s reveal in the Super Smash Bros. trailer was the moment of the show for many. Do you remember your reaction, when you realized who that shadowy figure was, standing on top of that mountain? And then when he flew into action, and tapped into decades’ worth of Robot Master weapon data to attack Mario, Link, Kirby and Donkey Kong? It was one of the best E3 moments ever! (Reminder to self: Write a post about the best E3 moments ever some time.) Following the pattern for this series […]

Going through the entire process of printing and shipping Issue #2 was a great learning experience – since Issue #1 had been on MagCloud only, it wasn’t until #2’s production cycle was complete that we actually got a sense for what the regular pattern of work would be. Just as soon as #2 was packed and sent out the door to our thousands of subscribers, though, it was time to restart the cycle back at the beginning again. In planning what our focus would be for Issue #3, David Oxford made a persuasive pitch about focusing a feature article on the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie – the reason being that the film’s 20th anniversary would be falling within the issue’s scope of May/June 2013. You’ll rarely find someone as passionate and knowledgeable about a movie as David is about SMB, so he got the thumbs-up to move forward and craft an expansive retrospective feature on the production of the […]

Did you already take a look inside of our Issue #1, or grab a digital download of it for just 99 cents in the NF Store? I hope so, because we’re rolling right along now to Issue #2. We were truly amazed at the huge outpouring of support that came our way when our debut issue was launched. Thousands of fans bought copies – and expensive copies, too! The print-on-demand price was steep, and yet still people weren’t deterred. When all was said and done, Nintendo Force Magazine: Issue #1 had become the best-selling single magazine issue in the history of HP MagCloud. It reigned in the #1 Most Popular spot on their site for months afterward. The president of MagCloud personally contacted me because he was so flabbergasted. It was a fun and wonderfully encouraging time. So encouraging, in fact, that we immediately went to work to capitalize on the momentum and give our instant thousands of fans the […]

As our first issue’s first anniversary is fast approaching in just a few days, the Nintendo Force is kicking off a walk down memory lane. For the next several days, we’ll be looking back on each of the six issues of NF Magazine we’ve produced so far – leading up to the reveal of the cover art for Issue #7 and the unveiling of our plan for subscription renewals and new customers’ opportunity to jump on board for the full Year 2 of NF. We’re going a little fancier than just the common front-page blog post for these, though. As an in-depth look at each of our issues is a critical component of our new website overall, each issue will get its own standalone “Look Inside” page. There, you’ll get an up-close-and-personal look at the cover art for each issue, a description of how the Nintendo Force team approached planning and production for its content and then a selection of […]
