Have you ever walked into a house and thought the paint on the walls was totally atrocious? Maybe the carpet was a horrid color too, and the decorating was disgusting. And yet, the people who live there must love all of those things, or else they wouldn’t have chosen each one! Some people just have different tastes than others. The same holds true for video games. Over the years, different companies have tried to freshen up aging franchises by giving them fresh coats of paint – introducing striking visual changes in a new sequel, or shifting a series’ style of gameplay entirely. And, every time one of these shiny new paintjobs is presented to the public, you can bet that opinion’s going to be split on whether it was the right decision or not. Some people will love it! Other will hate it. Tastes will always differ. In our next issue of NF Magazine, we’ll find ourselves in the midst […]

Since the day that Super Mario Bros.’ countdown clock started ticking its seconds away, players have had to fight against not only the enemies and obstacles placed before them in video games, but also against time itself. In the decades since, manipulating time, traveling through time and racing against the clock have all become more refined and complex ideas leveraged by great game designs – and perhaps no fight against time will be so twisted as the one set to be presented in the upcoming Zero Time Dilemma, which claims the coveted cover spot for our all-new Issue #22! We’ll dive further into the history of time-focused games, bring you an exclusive interview with Kotaro Uchikoshi (the creator of Zero Time Dilemma and its predecessors, 999 and Virtue’s Last Reward) and also present, at last, a blowout on the next Legend of Zelda adventure – which may even have some time-warping aspects in it, too! All of this will be accompanied as always […]

Today is April 20, 2016, which means it’s been exactly 10 years since the fan-favorite Mother 3 first went on sale in Japan! In honor of that 10th anniversary of its release (and its strongly rumored upcoming English language release), the iconic Mother 3 will be the next game to grace the cover of NF Magazine. Issue #21 will be called “Lost in Untranslation” and turn its attention to the many different Nintendo games of the past few decades that fans living outside Japan never got the chance to play . . . officially, at least. A central feature will profile several of Nintendo’s most interesting unlocalized titles, from the well known to the obscure, examining the circumstances surrounding the decisions not to translate each one. Clyde “Tomato” Mandelin, our Interview section subject from Issue #20 and the driving force behind Mother 3’s fan translation, will return in this issue with the first installment of a new Legends of Localization column […]

The all-new Patreon era of NF Magazine is officially under way! Print copies of the new “Issue #20: 30 Years of The Legend of Zelda” have started arriving in subscribers’ mailboxes, containing the lovely double-sided Hyrule Warriors Legends/Fire Emblem Fates posters you see above. But wait! Did you sign up in time to get this issue? If you’re running late with renewing your 2015 subscription or if you’d like to sign up to start getting NF delivered to your home for the very first time, here’s another reminder that our subscriptions are now being handled at Patreon.com/NintendoForce. You go there, click “Become a patron” at the top of the page and then select the type of subscription you’d like to receive going forward. Simple as that! In fact, signing up on our new Patreon page is the only way to get Issue #20! It’s a Patreon-exclusive issue for the next full year, so even though it’s now listed alongside the […]

Here we are, Nintendo Force fans, once again at the end of a subscription cycle! This is the time of year when we launch our new fundraising campaign to keep NF Magazine coming to you. But rather than make a third Kickstarter campaign, this time around we’re moving things over to Patreon! The link is: Patreon.com/NintendoForce Patreon’s similar to Kickstarter in many ways – you sign up to support a project, pick a pledge tier, etc. But it’s better suited to ongoing projects like NF Magazine. We’ve had to break subscriptions into one-year blocks to fit the fundraising model here on Kickstarter – which was fine if you jumped on board early in the year while the campaigns were active, but confusing for any newcomers who came along later. Patreon also lets you do things like change your address directly – Kickstarter’s never allowed that, which has been a bit of a headache for anyone who’s moved to a new place […]

Hey there, Nintendo Force fans! Though our reviews are normally hosted only within the pages of each magazine issue, we’re breaking away from the norm to present our full review of Splatoon as a special look inside the new Issue #15! If you aren’t already a subscriber, click over to the NF Store to rectify that situation! (You’ll get a snazzy double-sided Splatoon poster along with Issue #15, too.) I THINK I’M addicted to ink. I can’t sleep at night (because I keep staying up later and later, playing multiplayer matches). My mind is stuck in rewind (“If only I had turned around and looked behind me, I would have splatted him before he got me!”). I’m far too seriously concerned about how an overweight cat will evaluate my “vibe” on any given day (“Am I SO HAWT!! today, Judd?”). It’s an addiction. And if you’re smart, you’ll make it yours too. Nintendo has put a lot of marketing muscle […]

When it was first revealed, Hyrule Warriors didn’t excite me as much as I’d hoped it would. I generally like the Dynasty Warriors games and their spin-offs, but this crossover just seemed to lack substance. As time progressed and more was shown of this title, though, my excitement grew – and it all came together for me at E3 2014, where I finally got to go hands-on with it for the first time. It was fast-paced! It was exciting! And, most of all, it was simply a blast to play. Now, I just poured several hours into the final version of Hyrule Warriors, and I’m here to offer up to you all an extended look exclusively here on NFMagazine.com. The first thing that I noticed about Hyrule Warriors was its cutscenes. While they’re not voiced (in typical The Legend of Zelda fashion), they are downright beautiful to look at. The opening scene shows a sleeping Zelda struggling through a nightmare, […]

The Nintendo Force is proud to present our all-new ninth issue of NF Magazine, Issue #9: Where Have All the Fathers Gone? It concerns itself with all things Dad – from a central feature focusing on the odd lack of fathers in Nintendo’s franchises to a featured Interview with Matt Bozon of WayForward and his kids at the same time, from the reflections of our own Brett Martin on what it’s like to raise two boys in his world record-holding museum of Nintendo memorabilia to a wide array of special Father’s Day-themed Comic Breaks. As a father to two boys myself, putting this issue together has been a special privilege. So please enjoy reading it! Bonus! This issue comes with a double-sided, “flippable” cover representing both sides of the conflict in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, letting you pick your preferred pointer finger. On one side, you’ll get the puzzle-solving digit wielded by the good Professor Hershel Layton, while the other […]
